The first high speed train linking Beijing with Shanghai departed at 15:00 on June 30, 2011 from Beijing South Railway Station, which marked the official operation of Beijing-Shanghai high speed railway line. Premier Wen Jiabao attended the opening ceremony, and then he got on the first train. Joining the "three cities and four provinces" and stringing the Beijing-Shanghai "economic corridor", this line is the longest high speed railway line so far in China with the largest investment and the highest standard since the foundation of P. R China. Premier Wen Jiabao gave a high commendation on the opening ceremony, he said this high speed railway line opened up a new chapter in China’s railway transportation history.
